SouthGobi Resources is focused on exploration and development of its Permian-age metallurgical and thermal coal deposits in Mongolia's South Gobi Region to supply a wide range of coal products to markets in Mongolia and China.

Ovoot Tolgoi is the company's flagship coal mine development project. SouthGobi has been issued a Permit to Mine and commenced open-pit coal production in April 2008 and and is selling coal to customers in China. Ovoot Tolgoi is located in southern Mongolia, next to the existing MAK/Qinhua coal mine, approximately 45 kilometres north of the Mongolia/China border

Ivanhoe Mines, the parent company of SouthGobi Energy Resources, announced a strategic partnership in October 2006 with Rio Tinto plc, based in London, England, and Melbourne, Australia, to develop Ivanhoe's world-class Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold deposit in southern Mongolia, 80 kilometres north of the Mongolia-China border .

 南戈壁省是蒙古国的主要煤炭产区，该地区最大的那林苏海特煤田距中蒙边境口岸策克市的直线距离仅46公里。该地区初步探明该矿地质储量为16亿吨以上，设计生产能力为年产原煤500万吨，是一个煤质好、储量大、埋藏浅、适合露天开采的理想煤田。
