The Iron Ore and Steel Derivatives Association was formed to reflect the changes in the iron ore and steel markets and the development of their associated derivatives markets. With 850 million tonnes worth over $160bn traded in 2008, iron ore is one of the most important commodities in the world today.The association is designed to act as a mechanism for liquidity-building and problem-solving, attracting input from users, traders and brokers that can be used to benefit the marketplace as a whole.

At its inaugural meeting in Singapore in July, IOSDA elected John Banaszkiewicz, managing director of FIS as chairman. Mr Banaszkiewicz summed up the opportunity for members of the organisation: “The iron ore market is rapidly moving from the annual benchmark pricing system to increased use of spot and index pricing. That means iron ore derivatives will become an important tool in managing price risk. At our first meeting, we brought the industry together and successfully established a brand new global industry association for a rapidly changing business. I think the timing is perfect.”
IOSDA is an interest organisation for participants in the iron ore and related derivatives markets worldwide. As has been seen in the freight derivatives market, an association of market participants can act as a useful mechanism and forum that can contribute to market growth as well as fostering co-operation and standardisation, bring access to legal advice and other resources.IOSDA is an independent organisation for principals, brokers and clearers that will at all times aim to act in the best interests of its members for the benefit of the market place in which its members transact.Specifically, IOSDA will aim to:

• Raise awareness and promote the trading of the iron ore and related derivatives;
• Promote education and knowledge among market participants;
• Promote high standards of conduct amongst market participants;
• Develop and promote the use of standard contracts;
• Develop and promote commonly accepted forward curves for contract settlement and historical analysis of markets;
• Encourage the development and use of independent market indices;
• Provide a forum for brokers and principals to resolve problems as they arise;
• Develop the use of other ‘over the counter’ and exchange traded derivative products for Iron Ore and related price risk management.

Membership of the association is open to all stakeholders in the iron ore and related markets worldwide, with a specific interest in trading, broking or clearing of derivatives contracts related to these markets. IOSDA is registered in Singapore under the Societies’ Act.
